Institute for Open Innovation, The University of Tokyo (IOI) was established in 2018 after being selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's support initiative, "Open Innovation Organization Development Project." Even after the completion of the development project in March 2023, the organization continues to be positioned as a university-wide entity responsible for forming and managing industry-academia collaborations. It aims to create innovations based on the university's knowledge and research outcomes, and it is engaged in various initiatives to generate new industrial structures from academic achievements.

In addition to traditional joint research on individual themes, the organization promotes ecosystem-type industry-academia collaborations involving multiple companies aiming to create new industrial structures, as well as modular architecture-type industry-academia collaborations that generate new synergies between business elements aimed at business creation. These networked industry-academia collaborations efficiently achieve social implementation and business growth as Market Ready outcomes by incorporating the formation of industrial ecosystems into joint research. We provide companies with opportunities for business transformation, new business creation, business structure reform, and accelerated business growth that cannot be achieved within their own organizations alone.

Furthermore, aiming for regional revitalization that contributes to the development of regional industries essential for our country's economic growth, we are working with local academia and municipalities to revitalize regions and transform and develop regional industries.

Takeshi KAMIJOH The management office of Institute for Open Innovation is composed of expert teams in coordination between companies and universities, intellectual property strategy, planning and management, export-control, and legal affairs to support the formation and management of industry-academia joint research.
